RSVP Etiquette 2017: How to Best Respond to Invitations
You have landed on this web page because you probably have received an invitation that included a birthday party, dinner party, wedding, christening or other occasions which included as RSVP request. Maybe it’s your first time receiving one and you have no clue of what it means and what you need to do. When a person set a special event requiring planning based on the attendees, the usual thing to do is to include in the invitation a request for RSVP. If you receive an invitation with a RSVP request, the most important thing you need to do is to respond quickly as soon as you know whether you can attend or not. If people invited missed to respond to a RSVP request, it will be difficult for the hostess or host to manage the event and to keep you off from the future guest’s lists.
RSVP is a French phrase “respondez s’il vous plait”, which means to “please respond”. Whatever occasion it is, responding promptly will enable the host to plan on the number of plates, amount of food, drinks and other important things needed for the event without ordering on excess. An invitation requesting a RSVP lets the sender know if the invited person will attend the party or not. If you receive an invitation with a RSVP request, you need to read it first and check the instructions on how to proceed with it. Usually, formal invitations include a small card that just needs to be filled out by the invited guest and it is mailed back to the sender in the enclosed envelope. Formal invitations with RSVP request may also include an email address or telephone number with reply steps. With the digital age we have today, electronic RSVP requests are becoming increasingly popular, and a host can design their own save the date. With the use of electronic method, the invitee will receive either a text or an email with the steps such as visiting a site or emailing back where you can just click the “accept” or “decline” button. It is really much easier and faster to use electronic methods, saving so much time and money for the sender and you won’t have to worry mailing it back.
RSVP invitations with “Regrets only” means that if a person invited won’t be able to attend the event, he should follow the instructions included on the invitation to inform the host, otherwise failure to respond means that the person invited will attend the party. If you already stated that you will be there in the event, then you are obliged to go because it is a bad or rude manner canceling or changing an RSVP. In terms of bringing guests, there will also be instructions as to how many guests are you allowed to bring.
