Flours that are healthy for you

We all have been using white flour in our kitchens. And we have become addicted to it somehow. But the white flour we eat is finely ground which means that most of the phytonutrients and fibers have been removed. Therefore, it is a wise choice to use different healthier options when it comes to using flour in baking and preparing your recipes. So next time you go shopping, consider other healthier alternatives to white flour. Also, carry cotton muslin bags so that your flour is protected from water and it is easier to carry them. They are eco-friendly as well. Following is a list of flours that you can use to make your food healthier.

  • Coconut flour

Coconut flour is very high on fiber. It can be a good low carb option for people who are on a reduced carb diet plan. Since it is high in fiber content it can lower your total cholesterol and stabilize blood glucose levels. It is also gluten-free which means people who cannot eat wheat-based food can easily consume it. One thing you should note is that coconut flour absorbs moisture very readily. So you would want to use more liquid in baking otherwise your recipe would come out far drier than normal.

  • Oat flour

Oat flour is very high in carbohydrates. It can help immensely in lowering your risk of heart disease. You can prepare your oat flour by grinding it up in a blender. It doesn’t absorb as much liquid as coconut flour does and can be a very cost-effective alternative especially compared to almond flour.

  • Chickpea flour

Chickpea flour is made from ground chickpeas. It is a great source of fiber and proteins. It can be used in foods like falafels, veggies, and meat burgers.

  • Almond flour

Almond flour is a great source of vitamin E. It acts as an antioxidant in the body and can help fend off free radical damage. Almond flour does not absorb moisture especially compared to coconut flour. Almond helps in improving your skin, nails, and hair. It is ideal for people following a gluten-free diet plan as it is gluten-free.

  • Rye flour

Rye flour is very rich in dietary fiber and helps in lowering cholesterol levels. It also helps in stabilizing blood glucose levels and controls your body weight. Rye flour can be used while preparing pancakes or muffins. Although it is not gluten-free it still contains far less gluten than white flour does. The flour is dark in color so your recipes may appear a bit dark.

  • Quinoa flour

If you want high energy carbs, quinoa flour is for you. The best thing about this flour is that it is an excellent source of complete protein which cannot be said for other flours. It is also rich in calcium and iron. Calcium is known to promote strong bones. It is ideal for those who don’t consume red meat.
