Burger King is revamping its chicken nuggets after customers described the existing products as “rubbery” and “disappointing”. The new nuggets will launch on September 1, 2026, with updated breading, marinade, and sauces to make them juicier and crispier.

The chain’s decision to rework its nuggets comes as part of its brand turnaround efforts, which have seen it recover from major operator bankruptcies and sales declines. Burger King is currently outperforming its competitors, Wendy’s and McDonald’s, in terms of same-store sales.

New Recipe and Sauces

The new nuggets will have crispier breading and a juicier marinade, and will be accompanied by a new, limited-time Special Savory Sauce. Additionally, Burger King has updated its honey mustard dipping sauce to be richer and creamier, and rebalanced the flavor profile of its Sweet & Sour sauce.

Amy Alarcon, the chain’s head chef for the U.S. and Canada, said that the nuggets needed a total overhaul, and that the company invited real customers, including kids, to test and refine the recipe. The goal was to create a nugget that delivers the quality, taste, and experience that customers have been asking for.

Turnaround Efforts

Burger King’s turnaround program has involved improving core parts of its menu, resulting in a degree of premiumization. The new Whopper, for example, has creamier mayo and a new bun, and is now served in a cardboard box instead of a paper wrap or bag.

The company is focusing on improving the quality of its products. By doing so, Burger King and its competitors can change the value equation without resorting to a price war. This approach allows them to compete over price-conscious consumers.

Chicken Wars

The major burger brands are currently competing in a “chicken war”, with Wendy’s and McDonald’s also investing in chicken innovation. McDonald’s announced that it would be reviving its Spicy McNuggets for a limited time, starting on September 1, which could make it more difficult for Burger King to gain nugget share in the late summer and early fall.

Burger King’s new nuggets will be available starting on September 1, and will be served in cardboard boxes to help keep them hotter for longer. Given the consumer trend toward chicken in recent years, the redesigned nuggets could help extend this lead.
