Cumberland Farms opens first namesake store in Europe
Cumberland Farms opens its first namesake store in Europe near Berlin, expanding its convenience footprint and launching the Maxi Fresh Bakery.

Cumberland Farms has opened its first namesake convenience store in Europe, marking a new phase of expansion for the Boston-based retailer. Located near Berlin, the newly remodeled outlet is the first of 250 locations the chain plans to rebrand in Germany over the next five years. The store features a new proprietary bakery program called Maxi Fresh Bakery, which the company is currently piloting at select sites in the country.
European growth amid U.S. IPO plans
Even as Cumberland Farms pursues an initial public offering in the United States, the company is also pushing forward with growth strategies in Europe. The U.S. remains the retailer’s primary focus, with plans to rebrand 600 to 700 c-stores to its namesake banner over the next five years and refresh 60 sites annually. Additionally, the company aims to expand its Krispy Krunchy Chicken locations to 500 by 2030.
Despite this heavy investment at home, Cumberland Farms continues to expand the Cumberland Farms banner in Europe. As of this summer, Germany accounted for more than 60% of the company’s 1,779 convenience retail sites across the continent. In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the company outlined plans to rebrand 250 locations in Germany to the Cumberland Farms banner over the next five years. The opening in Germany follows a period where the company divested many of its European assets, signaling a renewed commitment to the region.

The retailer has faced a difficult balance between maintaining its American roots and pursuing international opportunities. For a newcomer to the European market, this move signals a confidence in the region’s retail trends. While the U.S. IPO provides the capital and attention necessary for domestic upgrades, the German expansion suggests the company sees long-term value in international operations, even if those operations remain secondary to its home market.
Remodeling for the German market
Photos from the opening show the Berlin store has been fully remodeled to match the Cumberland Farms brand. Laurent Grobet, the company’s president of Europe, called the opening an “exciting milestone” in a LinkedIn post last week. He noted that more openings are planned in the coming months.
The remodeled facility includes the Maxi Fresh Bakery, a proprietary program the retailer is testing in Germany. According to the SEC filing, Cumberland Farms plans to roll out approximately 25 Maxi Fresh Bakery locations across Germany over the next five years. The first site is now open for business, providing a preview of what customers can expect as the chain expands its footprint in the region.
