Gordon Brothers, the owner of Poundland, is considering selling the discount chain and its Irish sister business Dealz separately. The company had initially explored a sale of both businesses together but is now weighing a break-up due to interest in Dealz from retailers and investors.

Dealz operates around 70 stores in the Republic of Ireland and has attracted interest from established retailers and private investors. Meanwhile, Poundland has drawn approaches from several well-known retail groups and asset managers.

A management buyout led by Poundland’s existing leadership is also being considered. Gordon Brothers has appointed Alvarez & Marsal to oversee the sale process, with formal bids expected by the end of September.

Poundland currently operates around 600 stores across the UK, following a significant restructuring of its estate. Gordon Brothers acquired Poundland from Pepco Group in June 2025 and provided up to £80m of financing to support its turnaround.

The potential sale comes after a difficult financial period for Poundland, with sales falling from around £1.8bn to £1.6bn in the year to September 2025, and a pre-tax loss of £85.2m. However, managing director Barry Williams insists the retailer is making progress with its turnaround, seeking to rebuild customer trust through simpler pricing and ranges.

The sale process is expected to be completed by the end of September, with formal bids expected from interested parties. Gordon Brothers will then consider the options for Poundland and Dealz, including a potential management buyout or a sale to a third party.
