TikTok Shop is reshaping how small businesses sell online, blending entertainment with commerce in a way that traditional ecommerce platforms struggle to match. With over 300,000 UK small businesses now active on the platform—and LIVE sales up 55% in a year—the shift toward real-time interaction is proving more effective than static product listings.

The platform’s approach centers on discovery commerce, where shoppers encounter products through trends, creators, or videos before making a purchase, all without leaving the app. This compresses the traditional shopping journey into a single, seamless experience.

Unlike conventional ecommerce, where visibility often depends on ad spend or search rankings, TikTok Shop’s For You Feed prioritizes relevance over scale. A small seller can reach an interested audience just as easily as a major retailer, as long as the product fits the community’s interests.

Jan Wilk, head of TikTok Shop UK, says the biggest change in recent years has been businesses treating the platform as a full retail operation, not just an ad channel. Founders, employees, and creators now play a direct role in sales, demonstrating products in real time. MAC Cosmetics, for example, has introduced LIVE studios in stores, letting employees broadcast product demos to online audiences. The result? A shop-floor staff member can now engage with hundreds of viewers beyond the physical store.

Beauty brand Glow For It, launched in 2020 by Daisy Kelly, exemplifies this approach. Kelly documented the brand’s development, product testing, behind-the-scenes updates, and customer transformations, before turning engagement into sales. More than 40% of the brand’s annual sales now come through TikTok Shop. Wilk notes that authenticity often outperforms polished marketing. “We speak to so many sellers across sectors that talk about how apprehensive they were about LIVE selling before trying it themselves,” he says. Some begin by working with creators who host LIVEs on their behalf. Others start with the founder talking directly to camera. “Many communities on TikTok Shop respond well to authenticity, which is more valuable than having a polished strategy.”

LIVE shopping drives urgency and trust

The platform’s push into LIVE formats has accelerated this shift. TikTok now hosts over 6,000 LIVE Shopping sessions daily in the UK. These sessions create urgency, allow real-time questions, and let buyers see products before purchasing, addressing common hesitation points such as fit, quality, or styling.

Wilk emphasizes that the focus is on community, discovery, and trust. Unlike static product pages, which only list prices and specs, LIVE sessions answer practical questions: What does it look like in person? How does it work? Is the quality worth the price? For brands still testing social commerce, the playbook is clear: the product and price still matter, but the person selling it increasingly does too.

Big retailers join the live wave

Established chains such as Debenhams and QVC have entered TikTok Shop, mirroring the approach first proven by smaller sellers. Their presence signals confidence that the platform can support larger catalogues while still delivering the personal touch of live interaction.

These legacy retailers are adapting their existing inventory to the short-form video format, allowing store-floor staff to demonstrate products to a national audience. By broadcasting from physical locations, they extend the reach of in-store expertise far beyond the traditional footprint.

Live Commerce Formats Expand Beyond Traditional Sales Tactics

Live selling on TikTok Shop now incorporates interactive formats that mimic entertainment rather than conventional retail. Platform experiments include real-time auctions, which thrive in markets where exclusivity and fan culture influence purchases. Sellers in categories like footwear and collectibles leverage these sessions to create urgency, allowing buyers to observe products before committing to a sale.

Content-driven selling and creator collaboration

Success on TikTok Shop increasingly depends on how well a product translates to video. Founders, employees, and independent creators often become the face of the sale, showing usage and answering questions in real time.

Beyond pure sales, live formats offer a testing ground for product ideas. Brands can gauge real-time feedback, adjust messaging, and refine offerings before committing to larger production runs. This iterative loop shortens the traditional development cycle and aligns inventory with demonstrated demand.

Collectible enthusiasts illustrate the model’s flexibility. Sellers of trading cards and limited-edition items use live auctions to create urgency while fielding questions about condition, provenance, and rarity. The interactive nature of these sessions helps buyers feel confident in their purchases, reducing the hesitation that often accompanies online collectibles markets.
