A series of earthquakes struck Venezuela in late June, causing immediate and staggering devastation. Grocery retailers and food companies across the U.S. have mobilized to help, transforming store aisles into donation centers and supply chains into relief pipelines.

Coordinated Response

Amazon is working with over 12 nonprofits on the ground in Venezuela, utilizing its global logistics and technology to reach affected communities. An Amazon Air flight departed from Miami to Caracas on July 3, donating and delivering around 500,000 supplies, including sleeping bags, tarps, and hygiene kits.

Amazon’s first distribution of free rapid response technology systems arrived in Venezuela on June 30, and hospitals and shelters in northern Venezuela are already using them to restore Wi-Fi connectivity. In the hours after the earthquakes, Amazon made cash donations to six nonprofits providing search and rescue, medical care, and other emergency services.

Food Donations

Goya Foods, the largest Hispanic-owned food company in the U.S., is donating 100,000 pounds of food to help families in the area. In partnership with Global Empowerment Mission, the food will be distributed from Goya’s warehouse in Miami and delivered to communities throughout Venezuela.

Goya has been at the forefront of disaster relief for 90 years, responding to hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, wildfires, and other humanitarian emergencies throughout the United States, Latin America, and around the world. The donation is through Goya Gives, the company’s global initiative dedicated to humanitarian relief and combating food insecurity.

Monetary Donations

Publix Super Markets Charities is donating $250,000 to Global Empowerment Mission to help support relief efforts following the recent earthquakes in Venezuela. “We extend our sympathies to the families who have been devastated by the loss of life and destruction caused by the recent earthquakes in Venezuela,” said Publix Charities Executive Director John Doran.

Publix Super Markets Charities’ donation will help organizations working with local communities to provide support to those impacted by the earthquakes and contribute to recovery in the area. Media reports have stated that over 1,900 people have died, over 10,000 were injured, and 40,000 are still unaccounted for.

Sedano’s responded to the crisis by immediately donating truckloads of bottled water to Global Empowerment Mission, as well as beginning a long-term community donation drive across all 32 stores in Florida. Customers can drop off essential relief supplies, including nonperishable food, hygiene products, and monetary donations in stores.

The food industry’s mobilization of earthquake aid in Venezuela demonstrates the power of collective action in the face of disaster. As the situation in Venezuela continues to unfold, the need for relief efforts will persist, and the food industry will likely play a significant role in providing support to those affected.
