Lululemon CEO Heidi O’Neill is reshaping the athletic retailer’s leadership team, about a month after taking the helm. Athleta CEO Maggie Gauger and Walmart Canada’s Joseph Godsey are joining as chief product officer and chief operating officer, respectively. This move comes as O’Neill marks her first month at Lululemon, though observers have been anticipating her strategy since April, when her appointment was announced.

These newly created roles will take effect on October 26.

New Leadership, New Focus

O’Neill’s first move as CEO aims to address Lululemon’s recent struggles, particularly with products that haven’t connected with shoppers. The new leadership structure promises to prioritize innovation, brand experience, and operational improvements. O’Neill’s statement shows the urgency of these changes, emphasizing the need to build a stronger, more competitive company through a coordinated leadership team aligned around strategic execution.

Familiar Faces Remain

Some key executives will stay in their current roles.

Shannon Higginson and Susan Gelinas will remain as chief legal and compliance officer and chief people and culture officer, respectively, ensuring continuity in critical areas of the business.

Design Takes Center Stage

The restructuring aims to place design at the heart of Lululemon’s operations. Gauger, a former Nike executive like O’Neill, will oversee merchandising, design, footwear, product innovation, and materials science. Her appointment reflects a broader strategy to enhance product excellence and technical innovation, addressing the company’s recent challenges with product resonance.

Godsey, with experience at Walmart, Sam’s Club, and 15 years at Adidas in various leadership roles, will focus on sourcing, production, commercialization, go-to-market, and fulfillment as chief operating officer. His role is key in strengthening product quality, execution, and speed-to-market, leveraging his extensive background in retail and athletic apparel.

Lululemon is also searching for leaders to fill several key roles, including chief brand officer, chief communications officer, and chief technology officer. These positions will play vital roles in shaping the company’s future, overseeing areas like brand marketing, global communications, and technology infrastructure, including cybersecurity and AI integration.
