Morrisons has rolled out an innovative multi-temperature Click & Collect locker solution, which the chain says is the first of its kind in a UK grocery setting. The trial uses StrongPoint’s locker platform at the retailer’s Skipton outlet in North Yorkshire, with every Click & Collect order now processed via the automated system.

Locker System Details

The new lockers enable shoppers to retrieve purchases without waiting for staff to deliver items to their vehicles, while also expanding the pool of available pickup slots. As part of the pilot, the Skipton store will lengthen its Click & Collect service window by two additional hours each day. Patrons are sent a distinct six-digit PIN, which they input at the locker kiosk to unlock their compartment; the merchandise is pre-sorted into the appropriate ambient, chilled or frozen sections before the customer arrives.

When an order is sizable, the technology can assign several locker doors to a single user, with the larger bays capable of accommodating up to three shopping bags. Temperature control is maintained at 3 °C-5 °C for chilled items, –18 °C to –20 °C for frozen goods, and 16 °C for ambient products. Morrisons has also embedded VoCoVo’s communication module into the units, giving shoppers a help button that connects them straight to store personnel for assistance.

Technology and Customer Experience

For purchases that include age-restricted items, the corresponding locker stays sealed until a team member checks the customer’s identification in line with Challenge 25 regulations. The supermarket chain added that the approach will also supplant the existing practice of handing shoppers loose parcels, as Click & Collect orders will now be pre-packed in paper bags. Morrisons group online director Charlotte Exell stated: “We know customers want Click & Collect to be quick, convenient and flexible, and our new locker solution is designed to be exactly that. By bringing StrongPoint’s proven technology to our stores, we can offer more collection slots while removing the wait for colleagues to bring orders to customers’ cars.”

The experiment aims to modernise the Click & Collect offering by employing automation to lessen reliance on staff and boost shopper convenience. By staging orders in temperature-regulated compartments ahead of time, Morrisons seeks to speed up the hand-over process and serve a larger customer base during the extended operating period. The inclusion of VoCoVo ensures that real-time support remains reachable, mitigating typical concerns linked to self-service lockers. This move mirrors a wider retail shift toward technology-centric methods intended to raise efficiency and satisfaction.
